SBR Latex 188

Carboxylated Styrene Butadiene Resin

Obaproof SBR Latex 188 is a superior quality waterproofing copolymer latex with a blend of special auxiliary chemicals.
It is a water base dispersion of synthetic polymer which will substantially improve the workability of concrete and mortars used for repairs, floor toppings and renders in building and construction industry.
By carefully selecting the proportions of cement, sand water and Obaproof SBR Latex 188, it will be ideal for bonding of tiles as well as natural stone, marble, granite, slate and ceramic tiles onto concrete, plaster, concrete block, fibre cement sheet, particle board, old ceramic tiles etc.

Description

Characteristics & Advantages

• Ready to use from the container- Simply add to the mixture of cement.
• Improve adhesion markedly to a wide range of substrates.
• Excellent resistance to water and water vapour when dry.
• Allows thin selection application and feather edging.
• Reduces shrinkage.
• Improves abrasion, chemical and impact resistance.
• Increases compression, flexural and tensile strength.
• Reduces water permeability, protects against carbonation.
• Reduces water-cement ratio for equivalent workability.

Application Area

• Flooring system: From underlayment to the tough industrial screeds.
• Concrete Repair: General repair of old building, patch repair, floors, reinforced concrete, etc.
• Primer/Bond Coats & Protective Coatings: Enhance protection of structure against salts, carbonation, mild acid, etc.
• Waterproofing: General waterproofing of floors, walls, bund walls, and tanking applications.
• Mortar/Renders: Improve adhesion, crack resistance and weather resistances.
• Grout: Increase bond, chemical resistance and crack resistance.
• Tile adhesives: To provide a high safety factor against failure, even in permanently wet conditions.

Pot Life / Shelf life

Shelf Life: 12 months when unopened in original packaging and stored in a dry cool place.

Storage

Store under cover, in a dry and cool place with temperatures below 30°C. Protect from freezing. Obaproof SBR Latex 188 contains sufficient bactericide to preserve the latex under normal storage conditions. However, like most lattices, if the latex is diluted and then stored or replaced, extra bactericide may be required.

Surface Preparation

1. Surface must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, oil or water.
2. Best results are obtained when smooth substrates are mechanically roughened or grit blasted or needle scrabbled to provide adeqiate key for installation of Obaproof SBR Latex 188 for cementitious mix.

Application

For bonding agent/primer: Before priming, thoroughly dampen the concrete substrate and remove any excess water. Apply Obaproof SBR Latex 188 with a brush or roller, covering 12 sq. metres per 4L. Mix 1 part fresh OPC cement with 2 parts Obaproof SBR Latex 188 as primer, adjusting for consistency. Use 0.3-0.5L per sq. metre per coat, with a maximum thickness of 0.5mm to avoid cracking. Apply the patch, render, or overlay while the primer is tacky or wet, within 20 minutes depending on conditions.
As for rendering/plastering: Apply the primer first, or dampen the surface if no primer is used. Mix cement, fine sand, and SBR in a 1:3:0.45 ratio, adding water for consistency. Avoid over-watering to prevent thinning of latex-modified mortars owing to the plasticising effect of the latex. Use 1.5L of Obaproof SBR Latex 188 per 1m² at 15mm thickness. If lime is used, it should not exceed 25% of the cement by volume. Increase the SBR Latex ratio to 0.5 for waterproof rendering.
For ceramic, tile and bricks slip bonding adhesive:
1. The basic guideline for the mixture ratio of both thin bed and thick bed is suggested as below:
Composition Thin Bed (up to 3mm) Thick Bed (up to 12mm)
Ordinary Portland Cement, OPC 50 50
Clean fine sand (max. size= 1mm) 50 125
Obaproof SBR Latex 188 15 23
2. Additional water can be added to achieve the desired consistency. Pre-dampen porous surfaces without leaving free water. Apply the tile adhesive by buttering the back of each tile/brick slip and push firmly into position. Allow at least 24 hours to harden before grouting the joints.

Cleaning of Tools

All tools should be cleaned immediately after use with water because hardened SBR modified cement has excellent adhesion and is therefore difficult to remove. Solvents such as white spirit used with coarse wire wool, can help to remove partially hardened mixes.
